Sometime we tend to approach work from three perspectives such as a job, a career or a calling.  If a person approach work as a job, he or she might be focused primarily on the financial rewards. In fact, the nature of the work may hold little say if a better opportunity which pays more comes by, the person is more tend to grab that job. If the work is approach as a career, we are more interested in advancement and to climb the career ladder as far as possible or be among the most highly regarded professionals in your field. That means you are motivated by the status, prestige and power that come with the job. If you approach your job as a calling, you focus on the work itself. You work less for the financial gain or career advancement than for the fulfillment the work brings. The question is how would you motivate yourself to bring 100 percent job satisfaction or motivate others by creating such climate? The first thing to answer is what step one should take to keep satisfied with the job. It might be a dream job with a dream location and good pay, but once you start the work, you might feel that you had to settle for something that falls short and now you find it harder and harder to get through the day.

The first thing which keeps me motivating is the work itself and the passion and love I have for the role I play in my organization. Providing my ideas, making right decision on behalf of the team, releasing a new look of the product and being successful makes me my day! Another motivator is when I see my co-workers and managers count on me and trust me as a responsible team player. I also improve my job skills by reading related books and magazines and researching online. I do have a mentor with whom I was working in two my projects and I find him one of the best managers. I speak with him regarding work issues and other technology factors and also discuss various strategies of testing which can be very helpful in my job. I have found many complaining about boredom or getting bore with their job. I am not quite sure why this happens with them, but such things do not prevail as my job is quiet interesting and makes me learn new technology and skills every single day. It is not only work but I arrange team lunch, I share a coffee break with my co-workers cube and we do get-together after work for a chat.

There are many ways I motivate myself at work and which also keeps me satisfied at work. The first thing is to consider the work as my passion and do for the love of someone, that is, say for example, if I am working on a Holiday then I can spend some other day with my family. It is obvious that I want to earn some more money and spend one extra day with my family as I love them and this motivates to work harder and grow. I also reward myself by working without any error! Say, if I intend to finish testing on one module then I decide myself to treat with some good food and also ask my co-workers to join if they can complete testing for their part of assigned work. I also prefer to share my bad day with my manager and colleagues and by doing that I learn new tricks and it relieves my mind. By doing such gathering and sharing our experience, me and my colleagues are now more like friends! LaughingIt is not only that we talk about work but we try to cover each other when one of us needs to pick the kids. Another best thing about my manager is he will ask the team to read and learn more new tools and QA techniques to perform better than before. He will send us major links to educate ourselves about QA testing and how to approach testing, documentation and various other tools. Once we were told to start a project on SAP, so we started learning more about SAP and its function by taking online courses. These are the few techniques which keeps me motivated towards my job and the career I have choose. I also find different ways to perform my tasks and in my previous project I used to switch task with my teammates. This gave us the opportuinity to learn new tools and functions.Cool

What is most important is not how you keep yourself motivated but that you keep the long-term benefits of your goals in mind. If you focus too much on avoiding the uncomfortable parts of accomplishing the goals then one will not accomplish much. It is better to find a way to keep going and remember that all things come with a price, so pay the price and enjoy what once dreamed for. The definition of success is mentioned as, "The progressive daily realization of a worthwhile goal or dream."( Egelhoff, 2004) It is not always that you win everyday, but the moment one fail vows to perform better tomorrow. Managers should support their subordinates and help them achieve their goals, as a result of which they will move the mountain. Encouraging co-workers and employees to measure their efforts and improve their performance is like obtaining their personal goals which can be the motivator for many people. My former manager used to tell us about our interview and how to imporve our speech and communication during the interview. He used to tell us why he selected us and where we need to improve ourselves? This was a great tips for us and due to which I know I have improved much while I am in intervews. Motivation comes within yourself but a manager can create the environment and climate to motivate the subordinates.

It has 2 facets, one is obviously money and next comes enjoying the work by means of freedom in work place, and able to achieve goals set by the management which also involves hard work. Otherwise one will feel lazy after some point of time without work pressure where instead of hard work lazy performance will make people feel boring.

I would like to know your case study. This topic has been considered as "HOT" in USA, not sure how this works in India. speaking with many different people, I have found work life in India to be more relaxing and stress free, apart from the transportation and commuting stress workers render.

Employers at USA, are researching and surveying for stress level at work and how to work with employees to create a stressfree environment. Google is an example by itself! [/color]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow's_hierarchy_of_needs

http://stinet.dtic.mil/oai/oai?verb=getRecord&metadataPrefix=html&identifier=ADA250073

thru motiquiz i had made a case study on 15 working men and 15 working women. its basically based on maslow's hierarchy of needs ( most who have studied MBA or management courses shud b well versed wid it).. and interestingly i found dat every one has different needs for their motivation .. it can be physiological to self actualization or self esteem or security or belongingness.

these 2 sites had been very useful for my work . sadly it isnt in a soft copy to send as i had to do it hand written.
paramitam - >>saspink Publisher | 2008-06-04 16:41:40
Maslows Hierarchy of Needs has these stages:

(1) Physiological needs i.e. hunger, thirst, sex etc.;
(2) Safety/security
(3) Belongingness and Love
(4) Esteem: to achieve, be competent, gain approval and recognition.
(5) Cognitive: to know, to understand, and explore;
(6) Aesthetic: symmetry, order, and beauty;
(7) Self-actualization: to find self-fulfillment and realize one's potential; and
( Self-transcendence: to connect to something beyond the ego or to help others find self-fulfillment and realize their potential.

The first two stages are vital than the bottom mentioned needs. I would say, a default needs to survive that a person needs to eat, drink and sleep so that he can perform his duties accordingly whereas, also needs a safe and secured environment to work. I am sure no one except the military would like to go work in Iraq nowadays! Usually, Self Esteem comes after a person usually knows and understands his/her potential and competitive advantage which self actualization. A person feels competitive once he/she accomplishes goals set. But this actually doesn’t matter if the person does not feel that he is likable nor has a feeling of belongingness. For example, say a person is the Director of QA, making $150K salary annually, drives a Mercedes, married, and have kids and lives in a mansion which costs one million? Somehow, he feels that management is trying to get rid of him by slowly harassing at work. This harassment at work is mental and there is no proof to report the Human Resource dept. He is not able to find the right job and thus he will have to stick with the one he has. Imagine the stress level of the person and think what will he be motivated at work?
saspink Publisher | 2008-06-05 01:27:00
The stress level he has at the work level is primarily because of the needs not being fulfilled. And the harassment is a direct outcome of it. When one feels the managment wants him outta here is simple 3 way machine -

1) givin him overload - he thinks they want me to see me fail in d mission
2) dat results to underpayment - ( he feels so)they want me to quit since i am being under payed
3)this leads to less motivation at work - to stress ( which is due cause of the 1st 2)

I agree that "Self Esteem comes after a person usually knows and understands his/her potential and competitive advantage which self actualization. A person feels competitive once he/she accomplishes goals set. But this actually doesn't matter if the person does not feel that he is likable nor has a feeling of belongingness"

The 5 stages of Maslow's hierarchy of needs is very complex in ways humans need them. Depending on the profession and the person the needs enthral . a man seeking power and position will not be "satisfied" with his job if he is been motivated by love and belongingness side or neither some1 who is motivated to work as part of a good team and colleagues wud be motivated by a salary hike or better perks n incentives at work.

the work environment altogether helps a person to be mobilized and motivated to work.
the problem lies here as different people are motivated in different levels. . how can some1 provide all of them all of their motivational needs.
paramitam - how can some1 provide all of t Publisher | 2008-06-05 16:08:57
Exactly and this is impossible. Your saying"a man seeking power and position will not be "satisfied" with his job if he is been motivated by love and belongingness side or neither some1 who is motivated to work as part of a good team and colleagues wud be motivated by a salary hike or better perks n incentives at work."somewhat brings another question.

Case 1
In my organization, we have less work, less to learn from work and thus this is causing many to get bored and not motivated. At the sametime, the stress level is low or may be 0.1% and good people, who care and cooperate everytime. These factors has made many to stay with the job. Google is considered to be the #1 company in the world with the best culture. But I was not motivated there as I found no opportunities, either people to be polite and pay which stinks. But in my current employment, I am quiet motivated, has a belongingness in the team and organization, I have good rapoort with my older teammates also its a secured job, which satisfies Maslow's most of the Hierarchial needs.

Case 2
Another example of what you said that people might be motivated with pay and incentives. I have friend who works in Gobernment sector in Surat. His company just raised pay for all employees with bonus. is he motivated? Damn NO! What he says is, he get spaid and holidays to move around, job i very secured..and that all I like about. People stink, work stinks - infact he works the month of April in an year. What are his motivational factors?
saspink Publisher | 2008-06-06 00:41:22
aw well the pay commission increased the govt salary as a motivational factor and came in good times wd the inflation in the market ! and govt officials are less motivated to work coz dey have interval scheduled reinforcement ! .. watver it is - dey work or not. . dey will get the salary at the end of the month ..

the less to learn and experience from work can vary from different work. as u said ..

"But in my current employment, I am quiet motivated, has a belongingness in the team and organization, I have good rapoort with my older teammates also its a secured job, which satisfies Maslow's most of the Hierarchial needs."
u should be satisfied coz these are ur needs .. while others mite tell .."who cares i love my seniors and colleagues ? i get to have status and people know me for what i am .. dats more than enuff.. "

another xample wud be ur not likin google.. where ppl actually die for the job ... status - power - money watever may d reason be

now providin these to every1 in the work-environ ment is by testing their needs - u recruit them .. gv them d motiquiz and see wat one likes .. now the satisfaction cant come from allover .. i pay u a good amt .. train ur seniors to b nice wid u .. gv u enuff status as per work and gv u d basic security needs. its is pretty tough to manage all these .
