Sometime we tend to approach work from three perspectives such as a job, a career or a calling. If a person approach work as a job, he or she might be focused primarily on the financial rewards. In fact, the nature of the work may hold little say if a better opportunity which pays more comes by, the person is more tend to grab that job.
If the work is approach as a career, we are more interested in advancement and to climb the career ladder as far as possible or be among the most highly regarded professionals in your field. That means you are motivated by the status, prestige and power that come with the job. If you approach your job as a calling, you focus on the work itself. You work less for the financial gain or career advancement than for the fulfillment the work brings. The question is how would you motivate yourself to bring 100 percent job satisfaction or motivate others by creating such climate? The first thing to answer is what step one should take to keep satisfied with the job. It might be a dream job with a dream location and good pay, but once you start the work, you might feel that you had to settle for something that falls short and now you find it harder and harder to get through the day.
The first thing which keeps me motivating is the work itself and the passion and love I have for the role I play in my organization. Providing my ideas, making right decision on behalf of the team, releasing a new look of the product and being successful makes me my day! Another motivator is when I see my co-workers and managers count on me and trust me as a responsible team player. I also improve my job skills by reading related books and magazines and researching online. I do have a mentor with whom I was working in two my projects and I find him one of the best managers. I speak with him regarding work issues and other technology factors and also discuss various strategies of testing which can be very helpful in my job. I have found many complaining about boredom or getting bore with their job. I am not quite sure why this happens with them, but such things do not prevail as my job is quiet interesting and makes me learn new technology and skills every single day. It is not only work but I arrange team lunch, I share a coffee break with my co-workers cube and we do get-together after work for a chat.
There are many ways I motivate myself at work and which also keeps me satisfied at work. The first thing is to consider the work as my passion and do for the love of someone, that is, say for example, if I am working on a Holiday then I can spend some other day with my family. It is obvious that I want to earn some more money and spend one extra day with my family as I love them and this motivates to work harder and grow. I also reward myself by working without any error! Say, if I intend to finish testing on one module then I decide myself to treat with some good food and also ask my co-workers to join if they can complete testing for their part of assigned work. I also prefer to share my bad day with my manager and colleagues and by doing that I learn new tricks and it relieves my mind. By doing such gathering and sharing our experience, me and my colleagues are now more like friends! It is not only that we talk about work but we try to cover each other when one of us needs to pick the kids. Another best thing about my manager is he will ask the team to read and learn more new tools and QA techniques to perform better than before. He will send us major links to educate ourselves about QA testing and how to approach testing, documentation and various other tools. Once we were told to start a project on SAP, so we started learning more about SAP and its function by taking online courses. These are the few techniques which keeps me motivated towards my job and the career I have choose. I also find different ways to perform my tasks and in my previous project I used to switch task with my teammates. This gave us the opportuinity to learn new tools and functions.
What is most important is not how you keep yourself motivated but that you keep the long-term benefits of your goals in mind. If you focus too much on avoiding the uncomfortable parts of accomplishing the goals then one will not accomplish much. It is better to find a way to keep going and remember that all things come with a price, so pay the price and enjoy what once dreamed for. The definition of success is mentioned as, "The progressive daily realization of a worthwhile goal or dream."( Egelhoff, 2004) It is not always that you win everyday, but the moment one fail vows to perform better tomorrow. Managers should support their subordinates and help them achieve their goals, as a result of which they will move the mountain. Encouraging co-workers and employees to measure their efforts and improve their performance is like obtaining their personal goals which can be the motivator for many people. My former manager used to tell us about our interview and how to imporve our speech and communication during the interview. He used to tell us why he selected us and where we need to improve ourselves? This was a great tips for us and due to which I know I have improved much while I am in intervews. Motivation comes within yourself but a manager can create the environment and climate to motivate the subordinates.
