Economic Crisis -- Where are we heading PDF Print E-mail
Written by arnab

We all have been reading a lot about the the imminent crisis that is facing all of us today and a lot has been said about this but is it having an affect or it is just being treated as another crisis that will just pass and everything will be okay . The truth is this economic crisis is the gravest challenge that the world is facing today and if not addressed properly it can lead to wide spread devastation and ultimately annihilation of the human race.

There are three main issues that are facing the world today

a) Global Ennergy Crisis

b)Global Food crisis

c)Global Environment crisis

All these three monsters are inter related and are threatning to tear the world apart. The energy crisis we are seeing today with global oil prices well abobe $135 a barrel it can and it will spiral into a major crisis if not addressed properly and on time , scientists have already perdicted that the world may have oild reserves for another 50-60 years and if by that time alternate fuel sources is not invented our children and grand children will have a very very difficult time.

Today with the increase in the enrgy costs we are also seeing a rise in the food prices not only in India but around the globe , people have now deciding whether to eat or to fill up a tank of gas. In the United States where public transpoort is a luxury except for those who live in the cities like New York , Los Angeles , San Francisco etc people have to depend on their own private vehicles for transportation , people in America like big cars , big SUV's but now because of the high gas prices people do not want them anymore , the sale of SUV's and Trucks have dropped by 37 percent , so deep is the crisis the General Motors has decided to close down 4 SUV and truck manufacturing plants in the US , Mexico and Canada.

The oil crisis along with the crash of the housing market has dealt a death blow to the once might US economy and mind you if the US economy goes down it affects the entire world. The housing market crisis was bound to happen as the banks lent money to individuals with poor credit scores and then when those individuals could not pay back the loan the banks were in deep economic trouble as they were vaults were all empty. This also led to the collapse of Bear Stearns and many other financial institutions.

With such a crisis facing all of us it becomes all the more important to invent alternative energy sources like Bio Fuels which Brazil is producing on a large scale these days to fuel its automobiles , following its foot steps United States today is also investing heavily in the bio fuels and my guess will be all developed countries will follow the same pattern , but a word of caution here , farmers today will be producing more sugarcane and corn because it is liquid gold for them and today the farmers who have been producing food grains will only produce sugarcane and corn to make bio fuels , this is major cause of concern because if all the farm land is used up for production of corn and sugarcane who will produce food grains ?? This will spiral a global food crisis and the irony will be people will have lot of money to spend but no food to buy , food will only be available to people with muscle and this will cause a deep divide in the society which will become very difficult to bridge.

The environment remains a major cause of concern today with large chunks of the arctic ice melting and increasing the sea level , and may be in about 80-100 years time many of the big cities and exotic holiday destinations will be under water, but mind you sea-water , which is not fit to drink and needs costly recycling measures to make it drinkable. With the earth's rising temperature we have seen increase of droughts , crop failures and the once might rivers shrinking , with the emission of green house gases we alreayd have hole in the ozone layer and day by day more and more cases of cancer and heart diseases has been noticed.

I would appreicate thoughtful comments and suggestions lets all make our world a better place to live.

Well yes, I would be interested in putting the suggestions if only it is heard by the lawmakers and other prominent leaders.
USA - Specifically George Bush is against the climate factor as he thinks, this might add more economic crisis in US market.
Looking at the current situation, I would rather panic about the simple nees of our human survival which is food. According to "The Independent" Food stamps are the symbol of poverty in the US. In the era of the credit crunch, a record 28 million Americans are now relying on them to survive – a sure sign the world's richest country faces economic crisis. What else we can see ahead. Starvaion in African countries increased and the none of our Oil marketeers are eager to help these people. Cruelty... they want to make profit outta our pocket and then deny to feed the poor.
Gas/Energy:
I am paying over $80 at pump/week, though I carpool, I can see Americans are paying $10/gallon by the end of 2008. The Russians have blamed and the EU has began say so. Ask any person in Europe and you know who to blame. I am not looking at the crude oil or diesel whichis just the worst raising the food prices. Water prices are gone up. God please have mercy on us!Amen!

Oh forgot to mention that US will be having 10 major Hurricanes this year. what else to add? It has also been predicte dthat the next President will have $4 Trillion debt when he arrives at the White House. Airline industry might merge themselves and so the big Techies. I am seeing the Heirarchy of Maslows Theory is fading away these days!
sandy - do we need to think everything IP:121.247.128.43 | 2008-06-10 06:04:23
accepting all the above mentioned facts are true, i still believe that this human race is so flexible and elastic that it will last till the sun earth moon and other solar system.the only question is how where and in which form?this has no immediate answer but the manner and speed technology and human endurance proving and pushing their limits, one day we might find we do not need food oil water and land to live.Instead living in space or in some other world. Mars may the next best destination to live .

Well, this could be your blissful imagination to step on Mars or Moon! May be Human will start flying cars and eat food made in labs and not grown in fields. Well, that time still has not arrived and I believe, we are still at the edge of some environmental change. May be change to occur which will be boon to the world in coming days. The fact still stays that is the survival of "US" (people) in current situation where increasing of gas prices, food prices, energy prices are going up, where unemployment is rising and falling dollar is raising inflation in the market.

Economic crisis will not cause "wide spread devastation and ultimately annihilation of the human race". The economic crisis has been caused a variety of reasons and bad decisions by the banks and FIs over the years leading to the subprime crisis, which along with exceedingly high energy costs have compounded the problems.

Food crisis has very little to do with the economic crisis except for the fact that prices have risen due to inflationary pressures.

Environmental issues are a separate problem that has little linkage to the economic crisis. We have been burning fossil fuel at an unprecedented rate, which has increased the green house gases, which again has led to temperatures increasing and polar caps melting.

Brazil has been advocating the use of biofuels for a very long time and cars there use a blend of petrol and alcohol. Biofuels like bio-diesel can be harvested from Jatropa, which grows in arid areas. So, it is not that prime fertile land will be used up for biofuels. There is a plus side too... higher prices mean less use of fuels and lower CO2 emissions.

Let us not build a mountain out of a molehill. There are problems and these have to be tackled by governments on a global basis.
