Planning To Buy A Camera For My Garpanchokot Tour PDF Print E-mail
Written by sandy
Sunday, 06 July 2008
I thought, I would write this article in media and entertainmentsection. But then decided this should come in here in this travelsection where camera is most of the time an important companion in anytourist spot where anybody visiting to capture the moment and sceneicbeauty of those places.
So I asked one my seniour ex-colleague whofrequently visits places regarding buying a cam. He suggested me twocams. One is NIKON COOLPIX L10 and FUJI FinePix S5700 . Healso suggessted that I can also think about a DSLR ( CANON Digital SLR Camera - EOS 350D ) camera which mightcost me 30,000 INR, where as these two will cost me around 5,000 INR and 11,000 INRresepectively.

I started surfing on the internet to know more about thesemodels. While I was searching another chat friend appeared online anddiscussed a lot about photography and finally decided to consider twomore camera models has to be kept under consideration. One is in therange of the FUJI is, SONY H Series - DSC-H10/B and NIKON DSLR D40. These two will cost 13,00021,000   INR respectively. INR and

Now one might think what is kind of budget  I have in mind whilethinking of all these models with varied  range. While buying stuff which is matter of passion and fashion  and hobby fasination comesfirst, then comes budget. As I am prepared for paying where its valuefor money.

But now the question comes what I getting for what. So I startedbrowsing the internet more to know about these models and their sellerswho giving best pricing. I found rediff, sify and indiatimes shoppinggiving good amount of discounts on all these models.

Now i am confused that weather to buy the cheapest one out of these for just talking pointshoot which is NIKON COOLPIX L10 or FUJI FinePix S5700 with better resolution for better control over photography or buying a DSLR for now like NIKON DSLR D40which will allow me to buy extra zoom lenses later when I will havesome extra money to explore my hobby of photography to an ultimateheight. :-)

I want to share some technical thing I have learnt so far from my experience with my zenith slr camera and sony k710i mobile camera where I faced problems like, I lost the subject because of the adjustment time it required in my old SLR camera or slow reaction time of mobile cameras. I am looking for this varied range of camera is because  of quality of image and capturing moments in a flash which varies from camera to camera based on the controls like shutter speed control, zoom lenses and memory. I have given stress on these three thing while selecting these models which again inversely proportionate to the price of these models.

So, I am hoping to have a discussion on which one to buy and why. How these are value for money.

The above pricing data taken from following sites -
1) Sify Shopping
2) Rediff Shopping
3) Inditimes Shopping

I have checked the site and compared the models I was looking for and found their price is higher compared to indiatimes, sify and rediff offering.
Debopriyo Datta - A reply IP:59.93.196.164 | 2008-07-06 16:07:23
First a couple of corrections in the original article.
1. The Canon 350D is obsolete. The current entry level Canon DSLR is the 400D at 33500/-.
2. The Nikon D40 is not available any more officially. The entry level Nikon DSLR is the D60 at 35950 with the 18-55mm VR lens.

The best price guide on the net is at http://www.jjmehta.com and not at the internet sites mentioned. Alternately try http://www.canon.co.in or the Nikon India site.

You will have to decide whether you want a compact or a long zoom compact or a DSLR. DSLR is a different game altogether and will entail a lot more investment into specialist wide angle and long zooms. A Nikon 55-250 VR lens will be another 12000. A 12-24 wide angle lens will be 31000 (in grey).

If you are looking for the best prices in Kolkata, try Capital Electronics in Esplanade or Ezone in Emall or the Canon Shop in Emall.

For the general photography buff, a long zoom compact as in a Fuji Finepix s5700/s5800 or a Panasonic FZ8 or an Olympus 560 will do the trick.

After all, it is the person behind the camera that ultimately matters. The camera just facilitates taking the picture.

From what I know, one first needs to decide what sort of pics he wants to shoot, and what the frequency of his clicking is? Let us assume that he wants to click only when ever he has a family get together, a marriage party once in blue moon, one picnic a year and for the rest of the year the camera would be lying safely tucked in its bag, inside the steel almirah (which was his marriage gift from his in laws). His pics are stashed away in post card size in the album, which adores the drawing room, is offered to the guests, who are totally bored as they can’t relate much with the pics, in a nut shell they gather dust. For such amateur photographers it is quite ok to buy any camera with 5 MP resolution, they don’t much advanced features as they would never use it. But for a little bit more interested guy these would be boring, he wants sharp pictures, close ups, add on features like Macro, Tele lenses, multiple exposure, aperture / shutter speed priority, auto as well as manual control, to name some, but cant afford any high end camera has to settle for something like Sony DSC H 10 / B (Pls. refer to http://www3.shopping.com/xPF-Sony-Sony-
Cybershot-DSCH10-B-8-1MP-Digital-Camera-with-10x-Optical-Zoom-with-Super-Steady-Shot). I am currently using Sony DSC H9, (http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/H9/H9A.HTM) which was the top model when I had purchased it. Though as per chronology D 10 should succeed D9 apparently it seems that it doesn’t,

D9 D10

If one goes through net one might find many other comparable features. I am using D9 and I can say it is a very good buy, it has most of the features which a semi professional photographer need, and the best is its 15 X zoom, better check the price at your local market!! It has night shot, multiple priority feature, movie mode, continuous pics and many more.
tai_dupur_belate_ghumio@yahoo - My first choice-2 IP:121.247.128.43 | 2008-07-07 01:36:20
but in the second top range I would prefer Nikon D80, it is quite good and comes with a fantastic lens 18-135 mm. I have not bought it till now, just because I was wondering should I invest so much as I hardly click many photos now! But still back in my ind I am eager to own that some day!!
Debopriyo Datta - D80 IP:210.18.60.65 | 2008-07-08 10:11:11
I agree. D80 is a fantastic camera. It is quite affordable now - grey at 42K in Kolkata with the 18-135 lens.
Nikon rumors talk about a D90 in the offing - probable launch at Photokina in Sep 08.

If you are in that league, a D200 (still available) is also a fantastic proposition. A new body is around Rs. 40K - cheap considering the fact in end 2006, a D200 body retailed for 1.5 Lacs (grey).

Petni - DSLRs and Lenses IP:70.129.154.83 | 2008-07-09 01:54:02
Well…its nice to see the discussion on such an informative topic. As far as DSLR s are concerned I would like to add that lens is a very important factor to be considered and I also feel that Canon is a better choice to go with ….ofcourse if you go by the quality and variety of the snapshots to be taken. It provides the widest variety of lenses so far. Nikon is a good brand though but it is hard to get the absolute specific lenses in many cases. But if someone is more keen to solve some wide and universal purpose with a single lens then Nikon lenses are good option but on the other hand if somebody is much interested in the quality and sharpness of the picture then he/she should have wide variety of lenses depending on the distance of the object, how sharp is the snapshot needed, if the object is moving or stable. And therefore it is an expensive affair if you consider canon but finally there is a trade-off in every field .

Say if you consider some moving object then I would definitely suggest having a lens with Image stabilizer. If money is not the factor then Canon’s redline lenses are the best ones available in the market so far. E.g:- in Wide angle lenses Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens is one of the best wide angle lens I have used so far. If somebody is interested to get a telephoto lens then Canon’s EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras is the best I would say for mid range zooming.

Canon Rebel provides couple of basic models like 400D or 450D….well if someone is trying to get 400D then I would suggest to add some more dollars / rupees and get 450D. I bet it is worth the money. Even though it is considered in the basic level DSLR s still it has got a whole lot of features from the high level photography cameras. U may get an 18-55mm IS zoom with that free which is pretty Okay to start with. Though I would say it is not a very good one and if you think the same then you may sell the lens back in ebay or somewhere what I did too. But it is a good one to start with. Previously I used to use Nikon 40 D . I must say it was a good old basic camera but again more you get the more you want. I was really not satisfied with the image quality and the variety of lenses that Nikon was providing me……anywayz hope the above infos will be helpful for you guyz .

N yeah! One more thing ….photography is not only an expensive hobby but itz a quiet cumbersome hobby too ….especially for girls . You may need to carry a tripod for proper stabilization and also a big bag with a bunch of lenses every where which I usually do and trust me it sucks . But finally again there is a trade off between everything. And here it is whether you want to save the beautiful moments for tomorrow’s beautiful memories or whether you wanna walk comfortably on the road holding hand of somebody wearing a nice evening dress. So in that case carry Sony’s Cybershot or go for Samsung . But lemme suggest you the other option ….you can always ask the person whoz hand U wanna hold for carrying the bag for you… .

Debopriyo Datta - Interesting Info IP:59.93.241.205 | 2008-07-09 19:20:37
Could you mention as to why you think that Canon DSLRs are better than Nikon DSLRs, when the Canon Pros are moving to the Nikon bandwagon.

I have a Canon 400D and am in the process of getting a Nikon D200. I think I take decent pictures . . . you can try my blog at http:\\dds-pictures.blogspot.com. Try the Cairo / Egypt pictures that were taken with a 400D with a 18-55 lens.

The issue I have with Canon is that all lenses that are worth buying are too expensive and the affordable lenses are crappy. Would you suggest a 17-40mm f4L lens, which in India sells for a princely 65000 rupees for a 400D or a 450D body at 29000 or 35000?

Nikon on the other hand has a kit lens - 18-55 V2 that hold its own against lenses worth $1000 dollars. Add a 55-250 VR zoom for Rs. 9000 and you have the entire kit. If you have a fetish towards wide angle photography, you can add a Tokina 11-16mm for 20000.

Also, it is necessary to cart your entire kit for a holiday? I toured Egypt with a 18-55mm (28-80 on 35mm) for the entire trip. I have toured Europe in 1998 with a Nikkormat FTN (still my favourite) and two lenses - a 43-86 Nikkor and a Vivitar 28mm f2.5 lens for a month. No tripod or that crap. With a proper camera, I still can take pictures at 1/4 sec handheld. No Image stabilizer is necessary. Auto focus and image stabilization are recent phenomenon. In fact the first camera with IS was the Panasonic FX-5 in 2004. I have one and still takes great pictures with the Leica lens.

Finally, any hobby taken seriously is expensive. Music, audio etc etc are no exceptions. The important thing is to master whatever camera that you have or will buy properly. It should become an extension of your eye. That will make you a good photographer. If not, even with a $17000 Hasselblad H3 with a 50 MP back, you will take mediocre pictures.

The advice is read, practice, review and go on . . .

I can not understand Petni's comment .. I dnt blv that Canon is Better than Nikon .. We had a presentation on that last semester. Canon vs Nikon and vote was going with NIKON, Check their product line and Company's set up for Camera.. u can understand easily..I can not agree with Petni at all ...One of my Close friend has Canon ,I tried to use..but I couldnt it was kinda complicated and the Shutter is not at all smoother than Nikon . Anyways I dnt want to hurt Canon users , its just my views on Nikon vs Canon

I am using Nikon D40X , and lenses are 18-55 and 55-200 .. i guess that is also good for a starting DSLR user , though i dont know is it available in India or not .. but Sandy u can try if u want..or u can go any shop and try some camera on hand..that make sense sometimes.. cause when i was buying this camera.. i went to a shop and took 3 or 4 cameras on hand.. and then finally i choose this because i was comfortable with D40X ..its kinda compact and li8r than other DSLR ...though it is Semi-Pro DSLR...still as a 1st DSLR user I am satisfied with this ....
anyways , u can chk some of my Picture..

Well Piu thankyou for the expression on agreement. But I do have some reservations on that. I never said cybershot is DSLR so I hardly find any point to roll eyes over that. I guess the point I wanted to make is for the girls if they find DLSR s and the accessories a heavy stuff to carry then may use other point n shoot cameras from Sony like Cybershot or the ones available from Samsung. As far as the point of agreeing with my views is concerned, I found from later part of your statement that U did that already by saying NIKON D40 is a good DSLR for the novice. I guess I have written it in pretty clear lingo that I used to use Nikon D40 too when I was one. . N yup! One more thingy, I never said NIKON is bad or CANON is good and also I never knew that the blog was about CANON vs NIKON or something. { to sandy}
I was just sharing my experience.

I do prefer CANON because I am very specific about choosing my lenses. Well again in this matter I do accede with Debopriyo where he said “The issue I have with Canon is that all lenses that are worth buying are too expensive and the affordable lenses are crappy” and I guess I made the same point too in the 1st paragraph of my last comment.
And Debopriyo I hardly know about the price of 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens in India. I got it in $650 and if calculated then it comes around 26,000 in Indian currency. It is still available in the same price in Amazon and in many online shops ( Guess you are aware that for electronics ACCESSORIES online shopping is pretty popular). I discern that for 26,000 bucks getting a 17-40mm redline series canon IS lens definitely does worth the money.

So Piu with your kind permission If I may, then I would definitely like to request you to go through the lines before making any point on disagreement b’cuz it seems that you are making the same point as mine but in a different way.
No hard feelings I like Nikon too and still possess my old D40 but the only thing I wanted to share is I like CANON more.
Debopriyo Datta - Canon lenses IP:59.93.240.22 | 2008-07-12 09:56:31
Lucky you for getting Canon Lenses at Amazon at decent prices.

Canon here is pathetic. It sends one price to buyers and when you go to buy the lens, it is nearly 150% more expensive. I'll give you an example . . . I was looking at the 55-250 IS lens. Canon price as on the online pricelist is 13500. The Canon shop price is 17000. It is available at www.jjmehta.com at 12990 amd on amazon at $270.

The official price for a Nikon 55-200VR is 10990.

No one knows better than me that why you wrote what. Regarding my comment on that cannon vs. nikon, I would like to say that, I was just reacting to the comments and counter comments. I just gave this healthy discussion a name. The original topic was very much on general digicams and DSLRS. I also heard that these lenses are NOT compatible with the old manual cameras, which is again a news to me as I was under the impression that Nikon is the only brand which has a full range of compatible lenses, for the manual as wella s digital cameras. Can piu or petni or Devo priyo or anybody else confirm that?
Piu IP:76.109.121.157 | 2008-07-16 20:46:22
Yes ... 18-55 and 55-200 are only for some of the nikon dslr .. like d40x and some other new models .. ...
Debopriyo Datta - Lenses IP:210.18.60.65 | 2008-07-17 07:47:38
These lenses are for Nikon DSLRs with the APS-C (cropped frame) sensors and cannot be used in the older 35mm film SLRs. The lenses are compatible (Nikon F mount) but you will get vignetting on the corners.

The older lenses are compatible (on the Dslrs) but D80 upwards you will get the AF to work. Older E series and other lenses have to be handled in a stopped down mode and of course - you will have to focus manually.

I am lining up a D200 for the same reason. I am still sitting with two cameras - a Nikon EM and a Nikkormat FTN & 4 lenses - a 50mm f1.8, 43-86 Nikkor C zoom, 70-210 vivitar series 1 zoom and a 28mm F2.5 wide. I will get to use all the lenses on the D200.

This is also the reason why I prefer Nikon . . I got the Nikon EM from my father in class 7 (1981) and have been a Nikon user since. I bought the rest of the gear - Nikkormat and the 3 lenses when I was in the University. Its been a long time with a brand - 27 years.

Lot of of track info - anyway, D80 is being phased out slowly and D90 (or whatever) launch is planned for Photokina in Sep 08. If your target is a great camera and at a affordable price - jump in.
Piu IP:76.109.121.157 | 2008-07-17 18:00:45

Debopriyo Datta - Lenses IP:59.93.215.173 | 2008-07-17 18:49:13
Hi,
Don't even try. The mounts are completely different and if the lenses get stuck, the lenses are finished (you will break the lens).
These lenses have got very good reviews and stay with them. D60 is a minor improvement over the D40x. The D40x is also very good. If you do want to upgrade, Amazon has good deals on the D80 and the D200 (mind you that the D200 is currently out of production and has been replaced by the D300 at about $1800 for the body).
In your place, I would add the Tokina 12-24mm or the 11-16mm lens and shoot away.

sandy - Fuji FinePix S1500 Publisher | 2009-10-24 08:54:04
Finally I have selected this... The Fuji FinePix S1500 which is a 10 megapixel superzoom camera that features a 2.7″ LCD and a 12x optical zoom lens with sensor-based image stabilization. It also offers a full manual mode for those who like to get the most out of their point and shoot cameras. The S1500 can shoot up to 15 frames at 7.5 fps at 2MP and six frames at 3.3 fps at 5MP.
