Kolkata - Howrah BridgeI travelled to Kolkata this winter from Jan 16th to feb 15th 2009 and came back with many many good memories. The nostalgia of being back to India after 7 long years was itself an experience. I was very happy to meet my parents , a few old friends , was very happy to see all the changes that have come to Kolkata but was also saddened by a lot of things as well.

As I landed at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport , I failed to understand as to how this can be even termed as an international airport . As the plane landed I thougth "have we landed in a dark open field " because all around the airport it was pitch dark !! also the infrastructure at the airport is so run down and broken that I wonder now why airlines are slowly withdrawing their services to Kolkata. Throughout the waiting area I was bit by mosquitoes with stray cats running around , the visitors gallery was filthy with cigarrete butts and coffee glasses strewn all around !!

Anyway I get out of the airport , get into my car and was really happy to see how many flyovers and roads have been developed and I reached my house at Tollygunge in about 35 minutes that was one dream commute and I thought wow Kolkata has changed for the good finally !! but my parents cautioned me as "Babi dont feel so happy you will see the reality during the day time " , so I just kept quiet , I was just happy to see my parents and my sister.

The next morning I went out to visit my Mashi in North Kolkata and woh what do I see . BMW's , Mercedes, Toyota's , Honda's , Suzuki's along with the the good old Ambassadors or Amby's which we all fondly call fighting for an inch of space on the metro's roads , I thought to myself is this what we call growth and development ?People are driving all sorts of cars , they have higher income and buying power and truly the standard of living has improved but I differ , this cannot be called as growth , growth happens when the country grows as a whole , personal growth does not matter , I have seen beautiful malls like South City , City Center , Mani Square and shopped at Spencer's and Big Bazar and yes its true it felt good , very good and again I was happy with the changes but as soon as I came out of the air-conditioned wonders reality strikes again , no traffic sense , cars honking all around , people fighting for space.

What Kolkata needs today is the political will to change the city , and that will start when the people realise how these communists have raped and ruined the city for the last 30 years. Kolkata is a city of intellectuals , but today I question that as I know that even students at the Presidency College have elected these commies in the student body elections , are people sleeping or they just dont want to wake up from their slumber? today Kolkata is nothing but a big garbage bin with garbage rotting everywhere in the city right from the point you enter the city at Howrah and still people do not want a change ?

The city also has to put its foot down on the number of people from Bihar and UP are entering the city , and the communists want them because they form the voter base , anywhere I went I heard hindi and bhojpuri instead of Bangla , Bengal should take a stand and learn from Raj Thackeray.

sandy - Unequal Growth - lack of aware Publisher | 2009-02-23 18:24:15
A segment of the society has able to improve their life style in a great magnitude with high income, much higher buying capacity and as a whole growth in the Indian economy. But the poor section of the society facing problem with the poverty which is directly affected by the unequal distribution of resources. This is not because of the government policy which is very much in favour of the poor section of the society in paper (for voting reason), but weak distribution and logistic system, lack of political will and most importantly lack of awareness about the rights of the people to have basic education and needs, which is missing in this country. We can only learn from the movie " Slumdog Millionaire " to be hopeful that one day India will become a truly developed country from a developing country. :-)

if we have to learn from the movie 'slumdog..' then surely these things will go on.... actually that is the problem - a term called 'hujug' killed us ! we always ignore our own things ...own culture .. reading books.. for which we were proud of.. and lost our glory... simple .. just like west! a typical copy from western culture with uncontrolled growth has taken to us a death. and, talking about foreign cars ?? huh.. would you have ever been in 60's .. you could see those foreign cars roaming around .. it's not new.. it's new because this communists stopped everything for the last 23 years... and we were so lazy to wipe them out...everything they did was just following the other communist countries and party line ... stopped every industry (over 50,000) for 23 years and now demolishing green farms for the sake of so called 'industrialisation' - which is utter bullshit - actually all greenary is trying to selling to land sharks against a huge commission...and talking about globalisation ? disbalanced grwoth can make the rich people more richer and poor to poorest !
sandy - Slum Dog will remain slumdog!! Publisher | 2009-02-24 16:10:37
Slum dog will remain slum dog and politicians will become millionaire. This is so evident and demoralizing. But the name of the movie can only raise hope in the people mind and that is why this average film got so much hype from the western audience because they facing the hard reality of depression and economic downturn. They might have found the hope from this movie to recover from this bad time. So why cant we, where we as a country economically in a better position then before?

well, if we wanted to get inspired by movies, then probably we got a millions of chances ...salam bombay, city of joy, paar, main azaad hun, hazaro khoyashe aise ... how many should i named ?? actually it's not the people's own choice... the choice is suppressing by media ... anyway, whatever it may be ... and there are hell lot of books to be inspired of.. still, the problem remains ..actually the problem is with us ..ourselves ... we never focus on the deep down to the problem, caz it needs a lateral thinking and wish to help each other... everybody is just running around for money and the most funny thing is they are not saving money.. just spending for consumables to compete with other people. just to show-off... so, they are facing soooooooooo off of oney now ... it is inevitable .... even what i am saying wud have been thrashed away as previously (6 months before)as there were so called 'economic boom' which was utterly a lie - a nexus created by corporates, politicians and economists !!

I would say I love Kolkata not for its BMWs or Toyotas but still one can get one square meal at 8 or 10 RS which is not available in any other metros. It may be sitting on a shanty across the pavement opposite to triangular park but yes t is available.
