Why do we need Cell Phones? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Tintin

Mobile phoneI have many reasons to throw away my phone but do any of us know that how dependable we have become to such devices and gadgets in our life? I will also say it’s as a fashion or we are just addicted to cell phones. In India, every person I met while crossing a small street was on this cell phone or text messaging someone or just listening to music. By God’s Grace, those parents of such teenagers or some parents, teachers, working class men/women were able to afford such heavily priced cell phones around the world. People buy these cell phones out of maintaining status, ego and self esteem or to just love to keep such gadgets. I am a gadget fan and would love to buy all of them if possible, but eventually, we all are becoming a bunch of fools. Though cell phones have their part to play in our life, but they do nasty things which we can simply get rid. As we all enter the electronic and computer age, people are just too busy or are just need some flexibility to reach their colleagues, business clients, customers, families or friends. Cell phone makes it all possible to do business in this computer era. But necessity and fashion are two different areas in our life. We can have a free flip phone for our daily purpose, but then people will like to have Smart phone or Blackberry to maintain their self esteem among friends and family.

Cell phones are expensive when we choose one that has the following features:- SMS, MMS, Photo text messaging, email, GPS, MP3, radio, camera, Windows mobile, Social Community and many others. A person can be better off with such features and if we try to look carefully, these stuffs are not really needed. Cell phone plans are expensive too and in this economic crisis, people need to budget their requirements. Moreover, there is a huge business competition among cell phone service providers and cell manufacturers like Samsung, Apple, Nokia, LG, Sony, RIM etc. Again, service providers make us sign contract which lasts for maximum of two years and they go without any contracts. So when one pre-maturely ends the contract, will have to pay penalty, which is not in-expensive. Service providers have special discount and free phones when person upgrades service, plans or extends contracts. But then person will have to pay high price when buying a phone without a contract.

Human psychology is pretty much unpredictable as it asks for more and once we get them, we keep craving for more.  So can we keep our requirements and greed low? Can we be happy with what we have in life? What can keep a human mind satisfied without these gadgets?

Tintin,

Yes, having a cellphone is really still a luxury. But, it's a necessary item for anyone who may travel alone, or at night by themselves. Can you imgaine being stuck out on the roadway, and having not way to contact anyone? Maybe we don't really need all those gadgets. But,the need to contact others quickly will never go away. I do thank you for this topic.

We do need cell phones for emergency but not all these gadgets. But then need changes within time and type of business we are in.
sandy - I want Nokia N82 :P~ Publisher | 2009-02-17 19:57:00
Yes!!! I want Nokia N82. I really liked the features and everything about it. But now I wonder what I will do with my Sony K750I !!! I am greedy and careful at the same time when I know I will do the same thing after one year time when another phone like this one will hit the market. When I bought K750I 2 years back it was a brilliant phone with 2 MP cam. But only difference then and now is the phone I had then was almost gone out of order. But now its not necessity but greed I must say. So I keep making myself understand that why I waste money for a phone which is more of a smart gadget then a simple phone. If I like the camera feature of that then why not i straight buy a digital camera instead of wasting money on that phone which I have already in form of Sony 750I.

Well, its good that you understand ur needs and were able to stop yourself buying a new one. I landed up buying a RIM blackberry which cost me $200 after mail-in-rebate. But I understand that I will need this blackberry for texting my friends and colleagues. It is also easy to check my cell account and usage in my handset. Sometime, when we think its not necessity becomes our necessity. but I was very keen to do my research before I landed up with this phone and service plan.

I am using Mobile since 2001, means 10 years, I already have changed it 8 times, means I have 9 handsets with me, My wife tells, it would help me to open a small second hand mobile handset shop, but by that time the values of the models would increase exponentially as they would all be antique pieces.
When we get a new handset with added facilities obviously we get attracted, to have it, Now Black Berry, Galaxy, I Pod and I Pad, and this is true for most of the gadgets, not only Mobile, Music system, cars, Cameras, even Flats Houses for the rich,
How did we survive before 1996 i.e. when the mobiles were introduced?? Well the fact is that we did, we used to check e mails from pc only, and before that, in 1990s there was no emails to,but we still kept in touch with our near and dear ones!!

We human beings give in to luxuries, so we buy the latest one, and then peer pressure, snobbish ness also is there!!
