Remember your school days, when we had fresh mind, and soul
with lots of creative ideas but no goals set for life. We only knew what we
need to show off our status towards our own friends and probably the new chick
or the cool guy in our college. A couple of Made in USA stuff will add its own essence.
We only knew how to spend our parent's money and be dazzled with the new
trend from top to bottom. Things changed dramatically as we grew up and as the
world globalize. Diversity was the essence and independency is the new form of
goal happening in today's 4G people. What will make you a Next Gen cool dude or
a chick - A choice of Mac, iPod, a Honda CRV or a new 4G mobile? (Excuse my
choice of iPhone) Listening to your number one song from your iPod or Mp3 player,
with a backpack, some tattoos around the corner of your body or neck, oversized
jeans with a Simpson encrypted Tees take the subway and land into the virtual
complex of your University - will that be the next in our Next Gen population?
Writer and director Ayan Mukerji with Dharma Production came up with anoutstanding and a mind-blowing script which reflect the life of one among us. SidharthMehra (Ranbir Kapoor) was a character which resembled most of the youngsterswho have a creative mind but are confused in life, thus known as ‘SpoiledBrats'. What are they confused about? The goals set by their parents and thedreams they have set in their mind - clashes and few simply choose the path setby their parents and most spoiled one will get out of house to become'Independent'. Though, Sid is not a kind of guy, who will get out of house, itwas his ego that let him leave his parents place.
AishaBanerjee(Konkana Sen Sharma), with her own dreams and creative mind, set out ajourney from Kolkata to Mumbai, thus to become ‘Independent' and earn her own and becoming a Bombay Beat (I say so as she reads everything about Bombay Beatmagazine and the dashing editor Rahul Khanna) writer. Her first day in Mumbai, accidental meeting with Sid and talking a walk, still she made it sure that noone gets any wrong idea!
Sidand Aisha are very different and symbolize two different categories ofyoungsters in our society. Aisha has goals set in her life and she is strongenough to face any challenges may come in her way. She is head strong and a bit kiddy. She resembles today's modern open-mind woman in our society. Whereas, Sid is a boy,who loves Simpson and any damn cartoons you name it. He has a Mac, Ipod, ablackberry, a credit card and a Honda CRV 2009. He is dashing, lovable, cute, childish and happy to go lucky type guy in the city. His first photographtaking of his own socks was creative, the kitties were very cute and observehow while taking pictures of Bunty (Neighbor's son), he missed his Ma!
Sid is the character I see everywhere here inUS, possibly, I am one of them, though my goals are pretty much set and beingIndependent I am bit more like Aisha. But I still find my peace playing videogames, poker, Mafia wars and still listen to my ipod's collection of songs. Igo happily to dance my stress out wearing one of those jeans (low waist bootcut brand-name) with my friends enjoying my tequila shots. No more descriptionabroad life as you might have got bored watching KJ movies by now. Back to themovie, Sid basically isn't a guy who would like to have an 8 to 5 routine jobsin an MNC or in his own father's company. He too wants to become independent, only his way of approach towards life is pretty different then any otherperson. Ayan Mukerji was quick to help Sid and thus, with help of Aisha, Sidbecomes an Intern in Bombay Beat Magazine. He is the topper now and loves hisjob. He photographs Mumbai and its charm into his digital camera and impresseshis boss. He is later offered a job at Bombay Beat magazine.
Thelove climax between Aisha and Sid, when the later one goes back to his parent'shome, is wonderfully displayed onscreen. Bombay Beat's monthly magazine is outand Sid reads the column which is written by Aisha - an expression of love towards him. Both then meet and expresses their love for each other. (Spending no time to sing lala and skippingthe melodrama) The movie though ends here but our life of Sid and Aisha goes on. The question is thus about the Next Generation who are confused in their life and their dream yet to come true. We are so busy that we cannot see how love passes through us and thus making a mistake of let them go away from our life. Each part of our life is now device with an iPod, Mac, Smart phone and an imported car. The love sequences also teach us that age does not matter when loveis there. Youngsters are ignoring many trivial things when choosing a partnerand love has no boundaries or limitations in life.
The movie also spreads an awareness among the people about choosing their own profession and pursue their own dreams, be it is music, photography, dance orany other, apart from the main stream. It has a similar message like Aamir Khan tried to spread through Taare Zameen Pe movie. Listen to the songs Iktaara, and Life is Crazy numbers, which are my favorites and the remix of Wake up Sid! At 1:00 AM, while driving way back home, felt like I was at cloud nine thus took a long drive before returning home. The good thing is, Bollywood movies nowadays are changing with such wide selection of talents. Ranbir is excellent and Konkana as usual is awesome and superb. Supriya Pathak as mother of Sid, struggling with her English is perfect and Anupam Kher justifies his role. Dashing Rahul Khanna gives an excellent performance! Bottom-line, the movie is worth to watch! Atleast you can go back to your school days and still return back home safel
Todays bollywood movies have a clear focus on globalization of the story. I don't see stories based on plots where a middle or lower middle class family in focus apart from few movies like Khoshla Ka Ghosla. May be because of the effect of globalization in Indian middle class families. I guess the middle class factor has vanished from Indian society these days.
I do not think the middle class population disappeared but globalization has an undue effect on the whole universe. People earn more now and migrating into different country is like a tradition. Again, no one would like to watch a movie where middle class population is displayed on screen. People like entertainment so like to see riches and beautiful places. But I guess, the new generation likes movies such as this and appreciate non-melodrama type movies. This kind of movies also opens the mind of such people who thinks their kids should choose the main stream and earn money, but they overlook a child’s dream by pushing him or her to fulfill their own dream or liking.
I agree, the middle class has not disappeared but people are now more educated and they travel other countries to earn money. Additionally multi national companies opening call centers and other branches all over Indian States has created more revenue and thus the total lifestyle of middle class people have changed.
