There are mainly two types of structure common in Civil Engineering.
One is RCC and the other is Steel. In industrial strutural design the
super structure is commonly of steel and the foundation structure of
RCC( Reinforce concreate). For example mills, bridge, etc etc. Ome of the most popular software under use is Staad PRO(url - http://www.staadpro.com/products1.htm)
There are
several types of foundations. Broadly deep and shallow foundation are there. Pad foundation, Strip Foundation
and Raft Foundations are some of the Shallow foundation. Piles, Piers,
Caiss and Compensated foundation are some of the deep foundations.
For
example machine foundation where loads varies based on the frequency on
the foundation. And here comes the important factor of resonance. The
machine foundation and the soil has their own frequency which should
be kept under consideration that they dont match while designing them.
To tackle this situation suspensions can be used to absorb frequency,
like using of srping. Other things can create problem like wind,
earth-quake, etc etc. Construction design also depends on the shape and
size of the structure.
One of the key and popular tool for structural designing is STAAD Pro. The are other tools avilable as well, such as ETABS, SAP2000, SAFE, S-Frame, StaadPro, Risa3D, Orion, EsteemPlus, Adapt-Builder, RAM Advanse/Performe/Collapse, Strap etc.
